Dial-Up Networking Setup Instructions 

for Windows 9X

Note:  This page is intended to give basic information on Microsoft dial up networking set up.  It is not specific to any one ISP and should not be considered setup documentation for your ISP.  The link called "Special instructions for accessing MSU Network Shares" can be used with most ISP's and will give you access to Microsoft networking shares  you have access to on the MSU network.

Double Click My Computer to open the My Computer Window. If a Dial-Up Networking icon is visible skip to Configuring Dial-Up.

Installing Dial-Up Networking

 

If the Dial-Up Networking icon is not available, you will have to add that program. If you have access to \\topaz\public got to Topaz Install. If you do not have access to this file the original Dial-Up Networking is available from your Windows 9X installation CD. Double Click Control Panel then Double Click Add/Remove Programs.

Select the Windows Setup Tab and highlight  Communications then click on Details.
Be sure Dial-Up Networking is checked then click on OK. Follow the installation instructions. Skip to Installing a Modem.

Topaz Install

If you have access to  \\topaz\public then Click Start - Run and enter \\topaz\public\updates\windows_95\msdun13.exe in the Open box.
Click Yes to continue.
Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
Click Yes to restart your computer. The rest of the installation will take place after you reboot.
If you get this warning answer Yes to keep the file.

Installing a Modem

Open the Control Panel and double click the Modems icon. 
If no modem is install you will get a dialog box to install a New Modem. Click Next to let the computer find any modem attached and powered up.
In this case it detected a modem, but could not determine what model it was. It will assign a standard modem in this case. If you have a floppy disk or CD-ROM with the drivers you will want to click on Change.
If your modem does not exist in the list of manufactures and you have a driver disk Click on Have Disk.
If the driver is on a floppy insert the floppy at this time. If the driver is on a CD-ROM disk browse to the CD-ROM drive letter.
Click on OK to begin installation.
Highlight the correct model if more than one appears in the window and click on OK.
You will be prompted to enter your location information.
At this point your modem is installed and configured. Click Finish to go to the Modem Properties dialog box.
To test if your modem is responding correctly, select the Diagnostics Tab then highlight the port your modem is connected to then click More Info...
If your modem is working properly you should see a response similar to the screen on the right. If you get an error you will have to troubleshoot the modem and com port settings to determine the problem.
Back at the Modem Properties screen if you click on Dialing Properties to verify your settings are correct for your location.

Configuring Dial-Up Networking

If your installation of Dial-Up Networking went well you will have a Dial-Up Networking icon under My Computer. Double Click the icon to create a new connection or modify and existing one.
Double click Make New Connection.
Enter a name for your icon and select the modem you want to use for access. Click Next to continue.
Enter in the phone number and area code then click Next to continue.

Special instructions for accessing MSU Network Shares

 
You should now have a new icon under Dial-Up Networking. Right click on the icon and select Properties.
Verify the information under the General tab is correct then select the Server Types tab.
Insure that Log on to network is checked and the only allowed network protocol is set to TCP/IP.  Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
Enter the information at the right into the TCP/IP Settings dialog box. Click on OK to continue.
Back at the Dial-Up Networking window select Connections then Settings from the menu. Configure this page as to your personal preferences.
Right click the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop and select Properties. Highlight the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter and click on the Properties button.
Leave the IP Address tab as it is the ISP will provide an IP number. Select the DNS Configuration tab.
Enter a unique Host name and the domain of your ISP. Then enter the DNS Server Search Order and Domain Suffix Search Order as in the screen on the right. You may have to add additional Domain Suffix's to address your particular domain that the file server you want to attach to resides in. Click OK to continue.
Highlight the Client for Microsoft Networks component or add the client component if it is not already there. Click on Properties. 
Configure this window with the information on the right. Change the Windows NT domain if you have a different one than MSU. Click OK to continue.
Select the Identification tab then enter a unique Computer name (the same as the Host name you entered for the DNS configuration) and use MSU for the workgroup. The Computer Description can be anything you like. Select the Access Control tab.
Check the User-level access control and enter MSU for the Obtain list of users and groups from: Click OK and reboot to make the changes.
If your PC gets an error message and cannot log you into the domain because the Domain Server cannot be found you may have to add an LMHOSTS file to the C:\Windows directory. If it still doesn't work check to be sure your bindings are correct. If it still doesn't work remove your Dial-Up network adapter and reinstall everything. If TCP/IP is bound to another adapter remove that binding also.
